We are pleased to share the initial programme for the next Hull Structural Integrity (HSI) Day, taking place on Tuesday 20 October 2026 in Monaco, as part of the wider Floating Energy Research (FER) Forum Week, hosted by SBM Offshore.
The HSI Day will have an overall theme of Hull Repairs & Robotics, bringing together operators, Classification Societies, technology providers, engineering specialists and academia to share recent developments, operational experience and emerging approaches across hull inspection, repair and maintenance.
The programme is continuing to develop, but presentations and discussions already planned include:
Hull Inspection, Integrity & Repair
Delft University – Inspection without removing marine growth
Marine Technical Limits – Inspection data management and repair planning
TotalEnergies & Bureau Veritas – Structural condition monitoring: Class and operator perspectives on RITs and predictive models
Bureau Veritas – Composite Patch Repair: A New Qualification Methodology
EM&I – Development of robotic technologies for hull inspection and maintenance, including King Crab and King LORIS
Petrobras – Presentation/topic to be confirmed
Robotics for Hull Maintenance
The afternoon programme will include a dedicated focus on the practical application of robotics for hull maintenance:
Remotion – Robotic surface treatment and painting for confined spaces, splash zone and subsea maintenance
Apellix – Remote presentation on high-pressure washing and drone-based paint spraying
SBM Offshore – Robotic tank-cleaning trials and experience
The day will also include an update on HIRAM – Hull Inspection, Repair & Maintenance, together with open discussion around current industry challenges and potential areas for future collaborative work.
Further presentations and speakers are currently being discussed and will be added as the programme develops.
The HSI Day is intended to be a focused and interactive technical forum, providing an opportunity to exchange experience between operators, Class and industry and to discuss where emerging technologies can practically support the inspection, repair and maintenance of floating offshore assets.

About the Hull Structural Integrity (HSI) Day
Over the last 10 years a joint industry project has run, the HITS JIP, managed by EM&I, to encourage the development of safer and more productive inspection techniques for FPSOs, e.g. diverless methods and remote inspection of confined spaces. These techniques have gained increasing employment, and the HITS JIP has been an important contributor to that.
The objective of this Hull Structural Integrity (HSI) Open Forum is to discuss in a wider group the structural integrity challenges faced by operators, class and regulators, and identify ways forward to find practical solutions.
We believe that the HSI Open Forum will build on the success of the HITS JIP by inviting the drilling, floating gas and floating wind sectors, and adding repair & maintenance challenges and solutions.
Subjects to discuss in the forum
- Risk Based Inspection methods
- Remote inspection methods
- Robotic corrosion protection methods
- Structural condition monitoring
- Robotic repair and maintenance techniques – above and below water
- Class perspectives on above topics
The program also covers a report on the latest results of the final phase of HITS – the practical testing of inspection techniques for bottom plating of cargo tanks, with minimal cleaning. If this shows promise, then it will prove vital to get class opinions on the extent and location of coverage needed to reduce human entry into these confined spaces. The results of these evaluations will be published in early 2026.
